Richard Sands began his entertainment career working as Lighting Director for 'The
Carpenters'. For the next twenty years he has had the opportunity to light 47 television movies and 100
one hour TV episodes. Of the 28 theatrically released features Richard has been the Chief Lighting Technician,
two have won academy awards for their photography. Richard has worked on projects with Francis Ford Coppola,
Stephen Spielberg, Sam Ramie, Joe Dante, among others. Richard was previously director of photography on the
feature films Lift, Blindness,
Seriously Twisted, Cugini, and
Little Fugitive. Richard was one of the visual effects directors of
photography on Starship Troopers, which was nominated for an Academy Award
for its visual effects. He has also shot visual effects test photography for What
Dreams May Come and The Matrix, both of which would move on to receive
Academy Awards for their Visual Effects. In addition, Richard was chief lighting technician of the blue screen
unit for A.I.. Three commercials shot by Richard have won 'Addy' Awards,
one of which premiered during the Super Bowl.
